Introduction to video (part 1)

 What are some advantages of digital video: 

• It is faster than normal video 
• Is easier to edit footage taken on the digital video
• Videos can be upload to the computer to edit and watch
• Can upload videos stargith onto sites- easy to share with others 

 What is meant by frame rate in video: 
The frame rate in video refers to how quickly an image or frame can be projected or displayed every second.

Are all videos/ movies the same fame rate, explain your answer: 
No. There are currently three main frame rate standards; 20p, 25p and 30p

• 20p- displays 20 progressive frames per second (Most commonly used frame rate, in videos and films)
• 25p- displays 25 progressive frames per second (Mainly used for the television and frame rate) 
• 30p- displays 30 progressive frames per second (Least used frame rate) 

What is meant by resolution, how is it measured: 
 Resolution is measured in picture elements or "pixels" for short. Resolution is a mixture of lines and pixels. A television or recorded video image is made up of scan lines, rapidly scanning horizontal lines starting from the top, moving down to the bottom. There are two ways to measure this:

1. Split the lines into two 'fields' where all the odd numbered lines are displayed first then all the even numbered lines are shown producing a complete frame. This is called interlacing or interlacing scan
2. All the lines (odd & even) are displayed sequentially. This is called progressive scan and is commonly used in computer monitors.

What is data compression?

Data compression is the process of encoding large files in order to make them smaller and take up less space. 

What is a data compression ratio?

Data compression ration (also known as compression power), is a computer-science term used to reduce the amount of data representation size produced by a data compression algorithm.

Why is data compression an important technique for the online world?

It reduces the amount of data stored on a hard disk or transmission of bandwidth. 

What is the difference between Lossy and Lossless data compression?

In Lossy data compression, the decompressed data does not have to be exactly the same as the original data. Instead, some amount of distortion is tolerated.

When the compression is Lossless there is no distortion. It is exactly the same as the original.  

Which method offers the greatest compression ratio?

Lossy data compression video codes generally provide the greatest compression ratio.

The video can be compressed at 100:1 ratio while audio and still images can often be compressed at 10:1.

The compression rate of lossy is about 5-6% while Lossless compression is about 50-60% 

Why is human psychology and perception an important factor in methods of Lossy compression?

Because very little of the original file is still there. The human eye simply “fills in the blanks” if parts of audio or imagery is lost.  Without the perception of the human eye we would see how much of a difference there is from the original. If we were able to see how much information is being distorted we would see the errors in a Lossy compression.

21/06/2011- Video editing

Today was the first lesson i spent editing our video. I managed to cut out all the unnecessary sections of the movie and make the movie flow together.the video goes for a total of 9:33, but i still need to edit out other parts that aren't very necessary to the move and add in the effects(:  Kayeleanne was making our story board by print screening important parts of our video that included good camera angles.

Overall I think that is was the most productive lesson of IST I have ever had (:

15/6/2011- video recording

Today Kaye, Tanisha and me managed to finish recording our video. We have quite a few good shots and all we have to do is edit the footage and make it all fit together to make it look like a proper video (:

7/6/2011- First attempt of recording video

Today Tanisha, kayeleanne and myself were playing around with the camera, and tried to see what angles were the best.
We also started to thinkg of the storyline towards our movieish video.
Some of the shots that we used might be used later on..if they were good enough (:

2. Why did the data transfer rates vary? [Hint: think of what happens when an eight lane highway moves into a two lane highway?]

The data transfer rates vary because there is so much information trying to be transferred. But only a limited amount of room to do it in. At times it may be fast because there is nothing else that is being transferred, while other times it can take a long time because there are many things being transfer at the one time.

      Broadband can be classified as an internet connection that is faster than dial up. 

2. What units are used to measure bandwidth?

Bandwidth can be measured using:

·         bits (b or bit)

·         Kilobits (kb)

·         Megabits (Mb) 

·         Gigabytes (GB)

·         Megabytes (MB)

·         Megabytes per second (MBps)

·         Megabits ber second (Mbps)

·         Kilobits per second (kbs) 

( a ‘byte’ is much bigger than a ‘bit’ e.g. megabyte and megabit   



      4. What are the speeds that broadband operates at compared to dial up?

      Dial up has a data transfer rate of 56 kbs while broadband has a data transfer rate of 256 kbs.

      3. How much faster is broadband than dial?

      Broadband is 200 kbs faster than dial up. This shows that broadband is in fact the faster option.

      5. What are some of the advantages of using a broadband connection to download something like a video compared to dial up?

      Broadband connection will download the video much faster than a dial up connection. Using a dial up connection could take hours, even a whole day while broadband will download the video at a much quicker speed.

      6. Create an image in paint that illustrates how a high bandwidth connection can move more data compared to a dial up connection at a given time.

Question 1 - Sound movies through what medium?

 
















Sound travels in mechanical waves. A mechanical wave is a disturbance that moves and transports energy from one place to another through a medium. In sound, the disturbance is a vibrating object. And the medium can be any series of interconnected and interactive particles. This means that sound can travel through gases, liquids and solids.

Question 2- What unit is used to measure sample size?
Sample format or sample size: Essentially this is the number of digits in the digital representation of each sample. Think of the sample rate as the horizontal precision of the digital waveform, and the sample format as the vertical precision. An audio CD has a precision of 16 bits, which corresponds to about 5 decimal digits.Question 3- what unit is used to measure sample rate?Sample rate: The rate at which the samples are captured or played back, measured in Hertz (Hz), or samples per second. An audio CD has a sample rate of 44,100 Hz, often written as 44 KHz for short. This is also the default sample rate that Audacity uses, because audio CDs are so prevalent.

Question4- Compare the quality of AM, FM and Digital radio.

AM (amplitude modulation) When the carrier wave is changed by its amplitude. The operating frequency is expressed in kilohertz (kHz).

FM (frequency modulation) When the carrier wave is changed by the frequency or varied dependent on the amplitude. The operating frequency is expressed in megahertz (MHz).

Digital TransmittingDigital radio is the next generation of radio. It is a revolutionary audio broadcasting technology, which dramatically improves sound quality, and will enable you to receive value added radio services for free.

By using the information gathered you can see that digital radio has the best quality, but i haven’t heard digital radio.....so in my opinion FM radio has the best quality based in what I’ve heard.

Is Digital Art real Art?

Is digital Art real art or not?

It can both be real and not real art. It is real because that artwork is that person’s own art work/ creation, but in other ways it isn’t because the computer does all the hard work, you just have to tell it what to do, and also because if you make a mistake you can just undo that mistake, while in real art mistakes can’t be undone by the press of a button.  

The Definition of “digital art” is: art created on a computer in digital form.

The Definition of “art” is: the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the sense or emotion.

Digital art should in my opinion be classified as fake because the computer controls many of the many aspects of the art work, like the brush stroke for instance. Real art should be hand drawn by people, not a computer programme that has been programmed to do it.

What are some of the advantages that digital paint and draw programs offer over the traditional methods (canvas and paint).

Some advantages that digital paint and draw programs offer over the traditional methods of painting are:

·        All the tools you need are in front of you

·        You don’t need to wait for the paint or anything to dry

·        You can have all the different shades, styles of colours you want without having to make that colour
